Scottish Women: A 21^st Century Song Cycle

Fiere is a unique collaboration between Gaelic singer Joy Dunlop and Scottish fiddle and harp duo Twelfth Day exploring the lives, loves and experiences of women in Scotland.  Using poems by female Scottish writers, they create a collection of new songs in English, Gaelic and Scots, showcasing the creative output of Scottish women through fresh and innovative compositions.

Drawing from a mixture of Gaelic and English texts, Fiere (a Scots word for companion or friend) includes poetry from a wide range of writers including Jackie Kay, Liz Lochhead and Morag Montgomery.  The project also features a traditional Gaelic waulking song and a poem by Sheila McLeod especially commissioned for the project.

The project will be released as an album in March 2012 as part of a UK spring tour.

Mòd Gold Medalist Joy Dunlop was nominated as ‘Gaelic Singer of the Year’ at the Scots Trad Music Awards 2010 and 2011 and also won the Fatea ‘Tradition Award” in 2010. About Twelfth Day

Twelfth Day are at the forefront of innovative, modern British folk music.  With a fresh, open minded approach to song and tune writing, the duo create an entirely unique sound, interweaving masterful fiddle and harp playing with beautifully harmonised vocals in stylish and dynamic arrangements.  From opposite ends of Scotland, Orcadian Catriona Price (fiddle/vocals) and Esther Swift (harp/vocals) released their highly acclaimed debut album Northern Quarter in July 2010.  Twelfth Day have toured widely in the UK and Ireland and in 2009, their track 'Fare Thee well' was selected by Channel 4 to be used in a short film by the makers of the hit show Skins.  www.twelfthdaymusic.com
